Campylobacteriosis

Campylobacteriosis is a bacterial infection caused by the Campylobacter family of bacteria. It is the most commonly reported foodborne illness in the United States, and it is estimated that over 1.3 million Americans get sick from this infection every year. Symptoms of campylobacteriosis include abdominal pain, diarrhea, fever, and bloody stools. In some cases, the infection can spread to other parts of the body, leading to complications such as meningitis, reactive arthritis, and Guillain-Barre syndrome. Treatment of campylobacteriosis usually requires antibiotics, and prevention is best achieved by thorough cooking of food, safe storage and handling of food, proper cleaning of food-preparation surfaces, and good personal hygiene.
