Fetal Pain
Fetal pain is the sensation experienced by a fetus in the womb during labor and delivery. It is a complex, multidimensional experience, involving physical and emotional components. Recent research has suggested that fetus can feel pain as early as 20 weeks of gestation. With better understanding of fetal pain, medical care providers can develop strategies to reduce or manage the pain the fetus may experience during labor and delivery. Treatments such as regional anesthesia, opioid analgesics, and non-pharmacological techniques may be used to reduce pain and discomfort. Fetal pain awareness has become an important issue in contemporary obstetric care, as it can have implications for the attitudes and decisions of pregnant women on pain control and labor management.
