Fetal Nociception
Fetal nociception is the ability of a fetus to sense and respond to pain stimuli. It plays a significant role in fetal development and has implications for medical practice during pregnancy and birth. Studies suggest that fetuses may experience pain after 24 weeks gestation, with increased sensitivity and complexity of the responses to painful stimuli as gestation progresses. Fetal nociception is important for assessing pain levels during medical interventions such as cesarean section and fetal surgery, and for developing efficient pain management protocols for in-utero interventions. It has also been suggested as a possible factor in the regulation of fetal body movements and heart rate variability. Research into fetal nociception is ongoing, with the hope of improving pain management protocols for both fetal and maternal wellbeing.
