Shoulder Dystocia

Shoulder dystocia is a difficult delivery situation in which the baby's shoulder becomes impacted inside the mother's pelvis, making it difficult or impossible for the baby to pass through the birth canal. This can be a potentially dangerous situation for both the mother and baby, as it can cause trauma or even death in the mother and/or baby. The risk of shoulder dystocia is higher for babies that are large for gestational age, or if the mother has diabetes. The main management strategy for shoulder dystocia is to apply gentle, manual pressure to the baby's shoulder and rotate it. Other strategies are also available to help in the delivery of the baby, such as using forceps or vacuum assistance. It is important for medical practitioners to have the skills to manage shoulder dystocia quickly and correctly to reduce the risk of injury or death. With proper management, most babies will be delivered safely and without complications.
