Gonorrhea
Gonorrhea is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by the bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoeae. Symptoms can include burning when urinating, a yellow or green discharge from the penis, discomfort in the lower abdomen, or a sore throat. These symptoms usually appear within 2 to 14 days of exposure to the bacteria. In some cases, however, individuals may be infected but display no signs of infection. Gonorrhea can be easily spread during sexual contact with an infected person, including oral, anal, and vaginal intercourse. It is also possible to contract the infection through contact with infected body fluids, such as blood or semen. Untreated gonorrhea can lead to severe and potentially long-term health consequences, such as infertility in both men and women. It is important to get tested if you think you may be infected, and to practice safe sex by using protective barrier methods, such as condoms. If you are sexually active with more than one partner, it is also important to get tested regularly to minimize the risk of gonorrhea transmission. With proper treatment, gonorrhea can usually be cured.
