Green Manure

Green manure is an agricultural practice that involves growing crops specifically for the purpose of tilling the soil. The crops are then plowed into the soil, where the nutrient-rich organic material improves the soil's fertility and structure. Green manure can be used to provide crops with nitrogen and other essential nutrients, to reduce soil acidity and to improve the soil's ability to hold and absorb moisture. As a result of these benefits, green manure helps to reduce the need for synthetic chemical fertilizers, thereby lessening the potential for contamination of nearby water sources. As an added benefit, green manure can also provide erosion control and act as a natural weed suppressant. Green manure is thus an important tool in sustainable and organic farming, allowing farmers to reduce their ecological footprint while increasing their crop yields.
