Composting

Composting is a form of recycling, in which organic matter such as food scraps, yard clippings, and paper waste are broken down into a fine, nutrient-rich soil amendment. Composting is an essential part of ecological sustainability, as it allows green and plant waste materials to be broken down and recycled by beneficial microorganisms and soil organisms, creating a nutrient-rich, healthy soil. Composting helps to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfills, and increases fertility in soil, improving water and nutrient retention and reducing the need for chemical fertilizers. It also improves soil structure, creating better drainage and increasing aeration, both of which are important for a healthy, productive garden. Compost can be used in the home garden, on commercial farms and in the landscape industry.
