Water Intoxication
Water intoxication, also known as water poisoning, is a serious medical condition caused by over-consumption of water which leads to an unhealthy rise in the concentration of electrolytes in the body. This can cause symptoms such as confusion, seizures, nausea, vomiting and even coma. In extreme cases it can even be fatal. It is mainly seen in people who participate in endurance sports or those who suffer from certain medical conditions such as diabetes. It is therefore important to take sufficient amounts of water but not too much, as it can be very dangerous. Proper hydration whilst exercising is therefore essential and good knowledge of the risks associated with water intoxication is important to prevent it.
