Systems Toxicology

Systems toxicology is a field of science that examines the effects of toxins on living organisms. It uses multi-disciplinary approaches to study the interaction between toxicants, genetic and environmental factors and their combined impact on health and disease. Furthermore, systems toxicology helps identify aberrant biological pathways and mechanisms in toxicological events enabling the identification of biomarkers of exposure and toxicity. Ultimately, it helps improve the understanding of the environmental and health risk of various toxins. In addition to its use in research, systems toxicology is important in informing the regulatory toxicity testing of chemicals and novel therapeutics.
