Pharmacognosy

Pharmacognosy is the branch of science that deals with the study of medicinal drugs derived from plant, animal or microbial sources. It is the study of the physical, chemical, biochemical and biological properties of natural drugs. This knowledge is used for the production of medicines, herbal health supplements and cosmetics. Pharmacognosy is essential for the proper evaluation and utilization of natural products for the benefit of mankind. It is important for the development of botanical drugs and effective utilization of medicinal plants. Pharmacognosy helps in the quality control, standardization and evaluation of herbal medicines and other health-related products. It also helps in understanding the chemistry, biosynthesis and toxicity of natural products.
