Konzo

Konzo is an upper motor neuron disease of the central nervous system that is endemic in some parts of Africa and is caused by eating poorly processed cassava. It is characterized by the development of spastic paralysis and difficulty walking. Konzo can have a severe effect on the affected individuals, as it typically results in permanent disability, and can even lead to mortality in severe cases. The most effective way to prevent Konzo is to ensure that the cassava is properly processed, as this removes the toxins that can cause the disease. Konzo has been linked to poverty, as poorly processed cassava is often the only available food source for individuals in resource-poor communities. Therefore, efforts to reduce poverty and promote better food security can help reduce the incidence of Konzo.
