Exotoxins
Exotoxins are toxic proteins produced by bacteria and other microorganisms that are capable of damaging host cells. The toxicity of exotoxins is greater than the toxicity of endotoxins, the other type of bacterial toxins. Exotoxins are highly specific to their host and can cause a wide range of diseases in humans, including food poisoning, cholera, and botulism. They are also used in the production of medical therapies, such as antitoxins, vaccines and antibiotics. In addition, exotoxins are increasingly being studied as potential weapons in bioterrorism. Therefore, understanding their mode of action is essential for controlling bacterial infections and creating effective countermeasures.
