Biotoxins

Biotoxins are chemical substances released mainly by a range of micro-organisms, such as bacteria, fungi, and algae, that can be hazardous to the health of humans and other animals. They can cause local and systemic toxic effects, depending on their type and the exposure level. Biotoxins are especially dangerous if ingested, inhaled or absorbed through the skin. Biotoxins are used in medicine, research and industry as they can affect the functioning of cells, due to their natural toxin-producing properties. For example, they can be used to produce drugs, diagnose and treat diseases, and develop pesticides and other chemicals. Additionally, biotoxins can be used to track environmental pollution and as a tool to study microbial ecology.
