Somatic Cell Nuclear Transfer (SCNT)
Somatic Cell Nuclear Transfer (SCNT) is a laboratory technique that is used to create an embryo by taking the nucleus of a somatic (body) cell and transferring it into an egg cell. The egg cell thereby receives the genetic information of the organism from which it originated. SCNT is particularly important because it holds potential for a variety of applications such as cloning and creating induced pluripotent stem cells, which can be used in regenerative medicine to generate tissues and organs. It also allows researchers to study the developmental process of cells by creating embryos. Furthermore, SCNT can be used to produce animals with certain genetic traits or to preserve endangered species.
