Vibrissae
Vibrissae are specialized hairs found on many animals, including humans. They are highly sensitive mechanoreceptors, especially sensitive to air currents around them. Primarily found on the faces of mammals, they help the animal detect its surroundings and detect structures and organisms. They can be used to help find food, detect predators, and can even be used as communication devices. In humans, they are more commonly known as “whiskers” and are most commonly found on the cheeks, upper lip, and chin. Vibrissae play an important role in an animal's sensory system, and the information they detect can help animals to make informed decisions about their environment.
