Primate Systematics

Primate systematics is the scientific study of the taxonomy, or classification, of primates, including humans, monkeys, apes, and prosimians. Its purpose is to understand the relationships between extant and extinct primate species in order to better comprehend their evolution. This is done through phylogenetic analysis, which uses DNA sequencing, fossils, and anatomical features to determine the evolutionary relationships between various primate species. Primate systematics is important in understanding the evolutionary history of our closest living relatives, providing insight into the origins of humans, and for conservation of endangered species. It is also a key tool for studying the behavior, ecology, and evolutionary trends of primates, helping to inform conservation efforts and the management of primate populations.
