Miocene Epoch
The Miocene Epoch was a period of significant global change, beginning 23 million years ago and ending 5.3 million years ago. During this time the Earth’s climate was warmer and sea levels rose. It was also a period of increased tectonic activity, volcanism, and mountain building. The Miocene profoundly impacted global biodiversity and allowed for the further evolution of many modern species, including early primates, whales, and horses. It also witnessed the first widespread production of grasslands and the transition to a more modern type of flora. Fossils from this period, including pollen and plant remains, are important sources of information for paleontologists studying ancient climates and environments. The Miocene Epoch is thus a crucial period of Earth’s history and further research is needed to better understand its long-term effects on the planet.
