Mesozoic Era
The Mesozoic Era was a period of time that lasted from 251 to 65 million years ago, during which Earth saw the rise and fall of numerous dinosaur species. This era saw some of the most dramatic changes in the planet’s history, including the breakup of the supercontinent Pangaea and the transition from an oxygen-poor atmosphere to one that supports most life we see today. In the Mesozoic, we can observe the origin of modern mammals, angiosperms (flowering plants), and various other groups of animals and plants. In addition, the Mesozoic Era is significant because it provides important context for the Cretaceous-Paleogene extinction event, a mass extinction which wipes out the majority of non-avian dinosaurs, paving the way for the rise of mammals. The Mesozoic is a critical period of Earth’s history, and its importance to scientific understanding cannot be overstated.
