Glycobiology

Glycobiology is the study of the structure, biosynthesis, and biological function of carbohydrates ("glycans"), a major component of all living organisms. Glycans play an essential role in a wide range of biological processes, including cell-cell recognition and signal transduction, immunological and inflammatory responses, microbial pathogenicity, and the regulation of gene expression. The interest on this field of research has grown rapidly over the past decades, and it is now routinely used in many fields of science, such as biochemistry, cell biology, structural biology, immunology, and medicine. With its broad range of applications, glycobiology has the potential to revolutionize our understanding of the molecular basis of life.
