Evolutionary Developmental Biology
Evolutionary Developmental Biology (also known as Evo-Devo) is an interdisciplinary field of biological research that investigates the genetic and physiological basis of the development of different organisms. It focuses on the evolutionary history of the development of organisms, expecting to understand the mechanisms by which organisms evolve and to predict potential evolutionary changes. The field has made a major impact by providing a unifying framework for the study of biological form, from the most basic morphological features to the most complex adaptive functions. In addition, it has opened up possibilities to use genetic engineering in species conservation, and to develop interventions to improve human health. Evo-Devo provides insight into the fundamental nature of developmental processes, such as how small changes in the genome lead to large differences in the outcome. This scientific discipline can help us understand the interplay between the environment and genetics on a much deeper level.
