Acrosomes

The acrosome is an organelle found on the head of a sperm. It is composed of digestive enzymes and acts as a ‘razor blade’ that helps the sperm to penetrate the egg’s protective coating to fertilize it. Acrosomes also contain a variety of signaling molecules that help coordinate the sperm’s behaviour during fertilization and are essential for successful reproduction in humans. Acrosomes play a significant role in male infertility, and understanding their function has enabled scientists to develop treatments for male infertility and improved fertility rates.
