Etiology of Allergy
Allergy is a condition caused by an exaggerated response of the body’s immune system to environmental substances (allergens). Symptoms can range from mild to severe. Common allergens include pollen, foods (like peanuts, fish and shellfish), and pet dander. Treatment of allergies may include the use of medications, such as antihistamines and corticosteroids, or of immunotherapy (allergy shots). Allergies can have a serious impact on quality of life and are estimated to affect around 20%, or one in five, people globally. It is therefore important to understand the etiology of this condition to ensure it is accurately diagnosed and managed.
