Nuclear Fission

Nuclear Fission is the process of splitting an atom, typically that of a heavy element such as uranium. This process releases large amounts of energy and is a significant source of power for nuclear energy plants. It is also a key component of nuclear weapons. The energy released in fission is millions of times greater than that released in the combustion of fossil fuels such as coal and natural gas. The process is controlled by neutron bombardment which causes the nucleus of an atom to split into two or more smaller nuclei, releasing energy in the form of gamma radiation, heat, and particles. Nuclear fission can be used to generate electricity, as well as to power submarines, spacecraft, and other vehicles. Its applications are numerous, making it an important part of our modern world.
