Energy Flow
Through Ecosystems Energy flow through ecosystems is the process by which energy moves from one organism to the next in a food chain. The most common sources of energy in an ecosystem come from the sun, which is used by plants in photosynthesis, and by other organisms through the transfer of energy from plants and other animals. Energy flow is essential to maintaining life in an ecosystem, as it provides energy for development and growth of organisms. Additionally, energy flow is essential for cycling of essential nutrients, such as nitrogen and carbon, between producers, consumers and decomposers. As energy moves up the food chain, some energy is lost as heat. Ecosystems that have a well-balanced energy flow are more productive and stable than those with an unbalanced flow.
