Thyroxine
Thyroxine (T4) is a hormone produced by the thyroid gland located in the neck. It is essential to regulating metabolism, as it controls the rate of energy production and utilization in the body. It is also responsible for controlling the development and maturation of cells, as well as various functions in the immune and reproductive system. Deficiencies in thyroxine can lead to hypothyroidism, which can cause decreased energy, dry skin, poor blood circulation, and depression. An increase in thyroxine levels can lead to hyperthyroidism, with symptoms such as insomnia, anxiety, sweating, and weight loss. Thyroxine is routinely tested in medical settings and is one of the most commonly prescribed medications for both deficient and excess thyroid hormone levels. Treatment of hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism with thyroxine is a safe and effective way to regulate metabolism and maintain healthy body functions.
