Porphyria
Porphyria is a group of rare disorders that affect the nervous system, skin, and muscles, caused by an abnormality in the production of certain enzymes responsible for heme production. Porphyrias can range from mild to life-threatening. Symptoms vary widely, but may include abdominal pain, weakness, fatigue, rapid heart rate, reddish-purple discoloration of the skin, sensitivity to sunlight, and mental changes. Porphyria is diagnosable through blood and urine tests, and can be treated with supportive care, lifestyle modifications, medications, and/or surgery. Treatment of the underlying cause is necessary to prevent serious complications and improve quality of life. Porphyria is an important medical condition to diagnose and treat, as it can significantly impact an individual’s overall health and wellbeing.
