Insulin Signaling Cascade

The insulin signaling cascade is a series of steps in the body’s control system that helps regulate glucose concentrations in the blood. It begins with insulin, produced in the pancreas, which binds to a receptor protein and triggers an intracellular signaling cascade that results in the activation of certain genes, which then lead to physiological changes. Insulin signaling is essential for the uptake of glucose from the bloodstream into tissues, and its absence can lead to diabetes. The cascade has also been implicated in a number of other metabolic processes, from the production of lipids to the growth, development and survival of cells. Understanding the intricacies of the pathway has provided researchers with invaluable insights that are being used to develop treatments for type 2 diabetes, obesity and other metabolic disorders.
