Beta Cell Loss
Beta cells are specialized cells in the pancreas that produce and store insulin, a hormone that regulates blood sugar levels. Beta cell loss is a key factor in the development of type 1 and type 2 diabetes. In type 1 diabetes, beta cells are destroyed by the body’s own immune system, leading to an absolute insulin deficiency. In type 2 diabetes, beta cells are gradually lost over time, leading to an insulin resistance and an inability to properly regulate blood sugar levels. Beta cell loss is a significant health concern and its prevention and treatment is the focus of much research. Potential interventions include regenerative therapies, lifestyle modifications, and emerging technologies.
