Placentation
Placentation is the formation and structure of the placenta, the organ which connects the fetus to the mother's uterus during pregnancy in placental animals. It plays an essential role in the exchange of nutrients and waste between the two and is therefore a key factor in fetal development. Placentation is studied to understand the development of mammalian embryos, the effects of drugs and other chemicals on the fetus, and to gain insight into the mechanisms of human reproduction.
