Miscarriage

A miscarriage (spontaneous abortion) is a spontaneous loss of pregnancy before the fetus is viable. It occurs in up to 20% of pregnancies and is the most common complication of pregnancy. The causes of miscarriage are not fully understood, although it is known that chromosomal abnormalities, hormonal imbalances, and environmental factors (exposure to toxins/radiation) can increase the risk. Miscarriage can have a profound psychological and emotional impact on the mother and her family, and medical and psychological support can help in the recovery process. Prevention of miscarriage is difficult, but it is possible to limit the risk factors through healthy lifestyle choices, such as avoiding smoking and alcohol, and by monitoring the health of the mother and fetus.
