Hedgehog Signaling

Hedgehog signaling is a vital process in development and homeostasis (maintenance of a steady state) in animals. It refers to a complex network of cell-cell signaling involving Hedgehog proteins, which are secreted molecules that activate the hedgehog signaling pathway in other cells. The pathway is composed of several components, such as receptors on the cell surface, transcriptional regulators, and signaling molecules, which work together to control a range of developmental processes, including the formation of organs, tissue, and nervous systems. The hedgehog signaling pathway has also been implicated in a variety of diseases, such as cancers and neurodegenerative diseases. In addition, research has shown that manipulation of the hedgehog signaling pathway has potential therapeutic applications for a variety of medical conditions.
