Fetal Death
Fetal death is a sad event in which a baby dies before being born. Diagnosis is usually made through ultrasound imaging which reveals an absence of fetal heart activity. Fetal death can be caused by a number of conditions, including chromosomal anomalies, placental abruption, infections, and maternal complications such as gestational diabetes. It is important to recognize and investigate fetal death as it can be an indicator of larger problems that may affect future pregnancies. Treatment options are limited, but usually involve support for the mother and family as they go through this difficult time.
