A.    Personal Statement
I have has been carrying out research on gastrointestinal cancers especially focus on esophageal adenocarcinoma research for more than ten years. I have extensive experience in gastrointestinal cancer biology, gene transcription and expression regulation, and molecular approaches to investigations of cellular mechanisms of esophageal cancer initiation, transformation and progression as evidenced by my publications. During my postdoctoral fellow training period, I started to direct my efforts to understand processes involved in the initiation and progression of adenocarcinoma of the esophagus. As one of the least studied and deadliest cancers in the US; we see its incidence increasing rapidly. The data independently generated in esophageal cancer led me to receive the prestigious AGA Research Scholar Award and DDC award and many publications and presentations in the national and international level in the field of esophageal adenocarcinoma. Recently, I have focused on aberrant stem cell signaling including Hippo,TGF-, Wnt and Hedgehog signaling in the pathogenesis of Esophageal and Gastric cancers as well as mediating chemo-resistance and identify biomarkers for targeting therapy.

The goal of this study is to determine the effects of galectin-3 on the activation of human pancreatic stellate
cells (HPSC) in vitro and in an orthotopic PaCa model and to identify the signaling mechanisms by which
galectin-3 activates HPSC and induces IL-8 in vitro.
