Biography:

  • Hui Ling received his M.D. degree in 2000 from the First Military Medical University (now the Southern Medical University), Guangzhou, China, and his Ph.D. degree in 2010 from the National University of Singapore, Singapore. 
  • After graduating from medical school, he worked in China as a physician from 2000 to 2005. 
  • This experience, along with his training in clinical medicine, nurtured in him a strong interest in biomedical research, particularly in the field of cancer research. 
  • During his Ph.D. study, he investigated the anticancer potential of triterpenoids contained in Poria cocos, a herb widely used in traditional Chinese medicine. 
  • He also explored the beneficial activities of naturally occurring or semi-synthetic shogaols (the pungent components of dry ginger) against breast cancer initiation, progression and metastasis. 
  • In October 2010, he joined George A. Calin's laboratory at the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas, USA, as a postdoctoral fellow studying the role of long non-coding RNAs in the initiation and progression of colorectal cancer. 
  • His research also involves the study of microRNA in cancer metastasis, genomic instability,  and its significance in translating into clinical usages.
