Multi-drug Resistant Pathogens

Multi-drug resistant (MDR) pathogens are bacteria, fungi, and other microorganisms that are resistant to the effects of multiple drugs or antibiotics. They are a growing public health concern due to their ability to cause infections that are difficult to treat. MDR pathogens can cause serious and sometimes life-threatening infections, and their spread can be a challenge to health systems, resulting in increased healthcare costs and development of new drugs and treatments. To reduce the spread of MDR pathogens, healthcare professionals must employ infection prevention and control strategies, such as hand hygiene, contact precautions, and antimicrobial stewardship. Through such strategies, the risk of infection from MDR pathogens can be reduced, and their impact on public health can be mitigated.
