Morphine

Morphine is an opioid drug that is commonly used to treat moderate to severe pain. It works by binding to opioid receptors in the brain and spinal cord, in turn blocking pain signals from reaching the brain and reducing the sensation of pain. Morphine is also used to alleviate breathing difficulties at the end of life and is often given in the form of an injection or a slow-release tablet for long-term pain relief. In addition to its medical uses, however, morphine can be abused and has a high risk of addiction, making it important to use it under medical supervision.
