Hallucinations
Hallucinations are false sensory experiences that are not externally stimulated and are instead generated by the individual’s mind. Common types of hallucinations include hearing voices, seeing people or objects that don’t exist, and feeling physical sensations without a source. Hallucinations are associated with a variety of mental health conditions as well as medical and substance use disorders. Understanding this phenomenon is essential for proper diagnosis and treatment of these conditions. In addition, research on hallucinations is helping to improve our knowledge of the brain and its complex functions.
