Drug Addiction
Drug addiction is a disorder in which a person compulsively uses drugs despite experiencing negative consequences as a result. It is a chronic, relapsing disorder characterized by compulsive drug seeking and use, as well as changes in the brain which can lead to poor decision-making, impulse control and drug cravings. Drug addiction can have dangerous physical and psychological effects, including serious mental health problems, organ damage, accidents and death. Treatment, which can include psychotherapy, medication, support groups and lifestyle modifications, can effectively help to break the cycle of addiction. Information on drug addiction and treatments is increasingly accessible and plays an important role in helping those affected gain access to the care they need.
