Bacteriophages for Drug-resistant Pathogens
Bacteriophages (or phages) are viruses that specifically infect and replicate within bacteria. They have been extensively studied over the last century and are now gaining attention as potential solutions to the global problem of antibiotic-resistant bacterial infections. Phages are able to effectively target and destroy drug-resistant pathogens without causing collateral damage to “good” bacteria in the body. This could improve the treatment of bacterial infections, reduce the spread of drug-resistant diseases, and extend the use of antibiotics. Research into the many different types of phages and their application to medical and industrial settings is ongoing and highly promising.
