Bacteriophage

Bacteriophages are viruses that infect and replicate within bacterial cells. They are the most abundant biological entities on earth and are essential for maintaining the ecological balance of bacteria in diverse environments. Bacteriophages play an important role in a variety of biological, medical, and industrial applications. In medicine, they are used as a form of treatment for bacterial infections, utilizing the bacteriophages’ ability to specifically target and lyse bacterial cells. In industrial settings, they are used to create genetically modified organisms and to purify water by eliminating bacteria. In biotechnology and bioengineering, bacteriophages are used in gene therapy, drug and vaccine delivery, and to detect and diagnose various bacterial diseases.

Pathogen is anything that can produce disease. Typically the term is used to describe an infectious agent such as a virus, bacterium, prion, a fungus, or even another micro-organism. There are several substrates including pathways where the pathogens can invade a host. Diseases caused by organisms in humans are known as pathogenic diseases.
