West Nile Virus

West Nile Virus (WNV) is an infectious disease transmitted by mosquitoes. This virus can cause a range of symptoms in humans, from mild flu-like illness to severe neurological damage and in rare cases, death. WNV is a global health concern, as it has spread from its initial appearance in the US in 1999 to many parts of the world. As such, prevention and monitoring of infection are important for public health, particularly in areas known to be at high risk for this virus. In order to prevent severe illness or death from WNV, it is important for individuals to use insect repellents and reduce outdoor activity during peak mosquito hours, as well as to monitor mosquito populations in high risk areas. Vaccines are not available for WNV, but researchers are currently investigating potential treatments to manage the disease.
