Rnase Protection Assay
RNA protection assay (RPA) is a lab technique used to measure gene expression levels. It relies on the principle that a sequence of RNA molecules can be detected and quantified in a sample. In essence, the assay measures the amount of mRNA present in a given sample by protecting the sample from RNases (RNA-degrading enzymes). By protecting the sample from RNases, the amount of mRNA present in the sample can be accurately measured. This data can then be used to determine the precise expression level of a gene within the sample. As such, the RPA is an invaluable tool for studying gene expression at various stages of development and understanding how gene expression levels may be altered in various disease states.
