Prophase
Prophase marks the beginning of the cell division process known as mitosis. During this phase, the chromatin of the nucleus condenses into the discrete chromosomes, which are made up of chromatids joined together by a centromere. This condensation helps to ensure accurate distribution of the chromosomes when the cell divides. Prophase also includes the building of the mitotic spindle, a microtubule structure which is essential in segregating the replicated chromosomes into daughter cells during division. Through prophase and the division process, cells are able to multiply and make tissue, organs, and organisms. Prophase is an integral part of the cell cycle and is a necessary step for the cellular development and growth of living organisms.
