Genetically Modified Foods
Genetically modified (GM) foods are foods that have been altered through genetic engineering techniques. These techniques are used to introduce genetic material from other species into the food plants, resulting in foods that possess certain desirable traits, such as improved taste, nutrition, or resistance to pests. GM foods are becoming increasingly important for meeting the food needs of the world’s growing population. They can provide higher yields, tougher skin, and better nutrition, as well as fewer pesticides and less water use. GM foods can also reduce food waste, as they are less prone to damage from pests, disease, or extreme weather conditions. The safety of GM foods is a matter of extensive public debate, and while long-term studies have not yet demonstrated any adverse health effects, further research is needed to understand the long-term risks of consumption.
