Folate Deficiency
Folate deficiency is a lack of folate, a B-vitamin found in food and required for many bodily functions. It is especially important during pregnancy since folate is necessary for the normal development of the unborn baby. Symptoms of folate deficiency can include anemia, weakness, fatigue, headache, irritability, loss of appetite, and poor growth. Folate deficiency can be treated by supplementing with folic acid or eating more foods that are rich in folate, such as beans, green leafy vegetables, fortified cereals, and citrus fruits. Improving folate intake is important for overall health and well-being, as well as preventing birth defects.
