Vibrio Cholerae
Vibrio cholerae is a Gram-negative, rod-shaped bacterium that causes the infection cholera. It is found naturally in the environment and can infect humans when they consume contaminated food and water. In humans, it causes severe diarrhea and vomiting, leading to dehydration and electrolyte imbalances which can be fatal. Vaccines and antibiotics are used to reduce the risk of infection and treat it respectively. Proper hygiene and sanitation are essential to control and prevent the spread of cholera. Vibrio cholerae serves as an important model organism in many areas of science, including bacterial pathogenesis, food-safety, and biotechnology.
