Syringomyelia and Syringobulbia

Syringomyelia and Syringobulbia are neurological disorders that affect the spinal cord. The primary symptom of these conditions is chronic pain, along with weakness and sensory changes in areas below the location of the disorder. Syringomyelia is caused by a cyst that forms inside the spinal cord, which can cause damage to the surrounding tissue. Syringobulbia is caused by an abnormal connection between the brain and the spinal cord. Both of these disorders can be treated with surgery, medications, and/or physical therapy. Surgery can be used to remove the cyst or to improve the flow of cerebrospinal fluid. Medications are used to reduce pain and to improve function. Physical therapy helps individuals maintain muscle strength, improve range of motion, and reduce pain. Improving the understanding and treatment of syringomyelia and syringobulbia can help improve the lives of those affected by these conditions.
