Protozoan Infections
Protozoan infections are caused by tiny single-celled organisms called protozoa. These microscopic organisms can cause an array of illnesses in people, from malaria to gastrointestinal diseases. Protozoan infections can range from mild to severe and usually occur when an individual has been exposed to protozoan-containing water or contaminated food. Treatment for protozoal infections typically depends on the type of organism causing the infection and the severity of the symptoms. In some cases, antibiotics may be prescribed, while in others, anti-protozoal drugs such as metronidazole may be used. Prevention of protozoal infections includes proper food handling and maintenance of good hygiene practices, especially when in contact with potentially contaminated sources.
