Nosema
Nosema is a genus of microsporidian parasites that can cause disease in honey bees. Symptoms can range from decreased honey production, to bee mortality. Infected bees may experience sluggishness, poor coordination, and weight loss. In heavily infested colonies, adult bees may be unable to forage for food and reproduce, leading to colony collapse. Management of Nosema infections include hygiene, quarantining of affected colonies, and the use of Nosema-specific treatments. Improper management of Nosema infections can have serious consequences, not just for the health of bees, but also for the long-term health of the ecosystem, as the honey bee is an important pollinator.
