Neisseria

meningitidis Neisseria meningitidis is a Gram-negative bacterium that is responsible for meningococcal meningitis, a dangerous form of meningitis. It is found in the nose and throat of humans and other primates, and can cause severe infection of the meninges, the protective covering of the brain and spinal cord. Neisseria meningitidis can be passed from person to person through direct contact with saliva or respiratory secretions and can cause a range of symptoms, including fever, headache, stiff neck, confusion, and seizures. Vaccines are available to protect against infection from N. meningitidis, and prompt medical treatment is necessary to treat severe cases of meningitis.
